Starting Tuesday, July 14, a new heat dome pushes 90–100°F temperatures and high humidity into the eastern United States, including New Jersey and the whole Northeast ([USA Today](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/weather/2026/07/11/weather-forecast-heat-dome/90877581007/)). The Washington Post reports the pattern could run 15–25°F above normal and last a week or more ([Washington Post](https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/2026/07/10/heat-wave-dome-climate-change-swelter-hot/b8c05eb8-7c5f-11f1-b194-f872dd4ec5aa_story.html)). This follows the early-July heat that hit 106°F in Atlantic City ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_North_American_heat_wave)).
When it’s that hot outside, the single most common call we get is some version of: “my house isn’t cooling — is my AC broken?” Most of the time, it isn’t. Here’s how a contractor reads the situation, and what you can check before picking up the phone.
The 20-degree rule: is your system actually failing?
Air conditioners are not magic boxes that can hit any temperature you dial in. Residential cooling equipment is sized to maintain roughly a 15–20°F drop below the outdoor design temperature, using the ACCA Manual J load calculation that the U.S. Department of Energy references as the sizing standard ([DOE, Central Air Conditioning](https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/central-air-conditioning)). In plain terms: when it’s 98°F outside, a healthy system holding 78–80°F inside is doing its job — not failing.
The diagnostic question is whether that gap is holding. If your system keeps the house roughly 18–20 degrees below outdoor temp all day, it’s working as designed, even if 79°F doesn’t feel as cool as you’d like. If the gap is shrinking — the indoor temp creeps up and the distance between inside and outside keeps closing — that points to a real problem.
Check these before you call a technician
In rough order of how often these are the actual cause:
- Replace the air filter. A clogged filter is the single most common reason a healthy system loses airflow and stops keeping up. Check it monthly during peak season; if you can’t see light through it, swap it. The DOE flags verifying correct airflow as a key maintenance step ([DOE, Central Air Conditioning](https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/central-air-conditioning)).
- Clear the outdoor condenser. Keep at least two feet of clearance on all sides. Trim shrubs, move anything stored against it, and gently hose off grass clippings and debris on the fins — never use a pressure washer, which bends the aluminum fins.
- Close blinds on sun-facing windows. Solar gain through glass is a massive cooling load. Shades and curtains on west- and south-facing windows in the afternoon reduce the heat the system has to remove.
- Hold off on heat-generating chores. Skip the oven, dryer, and dishwasher’s heat-dry cycle during peak afternoon hours.
- Set a realistic target. Aiming for 76–78°F on a 98°F day lets the system cycle and stay efficient. DOE guidance is to set the thermostat “as high as is comfortable” and avoid cranking it colder than normal — it will not cool the home any faster and only wastes energy ([DOE, Programmable Thermostats](https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/programmable-thermostats)).
Don’t set the thermostat to 68°.Lowering the setpoint far below what the system can achieve at current outdoor conditions doesn’t speed up cooling — it just keeps the compressor running nonstop, raising energy bills and equipment stress. Set a target the system can realistically reach.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency — call 911.If someone is confused, stops sweating, has hot/dry skin, or loses consciousness, that’s heat stroke, not a comfort problem. The CDC says heat stroke requires immediate emergency treatment ([NPR Life Kit](https://www.npr.org/2026/06/30/nx-s1-5874848/life-kit-how-to-handle-the-heat-wave)).
If you have no AC, or it fails during the heat wave
The CDC recommends staying in an air-conditioned place as much as possible. If your home has no working AC, spend even a few hours in a shopping mall, public library, or cooling center — it helps your body stay cooler when you return to the heat. Call your local health department to find heat-relief shelters, and don’t rely on a fan as your primary cooling method in extreme heat ([CDC, Preventing Heat-Related Illness](https://www.cdc.gov/extreme-heat/prevention/index.html)). Check on older adults and anyone living alone at least twice a day ([CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/extreme-heat/prevention/index.html)).
The bottom line
During a heat wave, a central AC that holds your house 15–20 degrees below outdoor temperature is working correctly — even if that’s 78° instead of 70°. Replace the filter, clear the condenser, cut solar and internal heat gains, and set a realistic thermostat target before assuming a breakdown. If the indoor-outdoor gap is shrinking or the air at the registers is warm, that’s when to call a licensed technician.
