Why Your AC Quote Is Sensitive to Copper and Tariffs

A higher number on your air-conditioning quote rarely has one cause. Copper markets, import tariffs, and rolling manufacturer price lists all feed the same line item. Here's what actually moves equipment cost — and what to ask before you sign.

When an air-conditioning quote comes in higher than a neighbor's from a year ago, the instinct is to blame the contractor. The reality is that equipment cost is wired into commodity markets and trade policy. A residential split system is, materially, a lot of copper, steel, and aluminum shaped into coils, line sets, cabinets, and motors — and those metals are priced globally.

Why copper is the headline metal in your AC

Copper is the working metal of an air conditioner: the condenser and evaporator coils, the refrigerant line set between the indoor and outdoor units, motor windings, and most of the wiring. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that building construction accounts for 42% of domestic copper use, with electrical and electronic products another 23% ([USGS](https://pubs.usgs.gov/periodicals/mcs2026/mcs2026-copper.pdf)). U.S. apparent copper consumption was about 2.2 million tonnes in 2025 ([USGS](https://pubs.usgs.gov/periodicals/mcs2026/mcs2026-copper.pdf)).

That demand keeps the price moving. Copper traded around $6.30 per pound in mid-July 2026 ([Trading Economics](https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/copper)), and market prices shift daily. When the metal that makes up your coils and line set climbs, the bill of materials for the equipment climbs with it — sometimes within the same quoting cycle.

Why not just switch to aluminum?Manufacturers already use aluminum for fins and some tubing — USGS notes aluminum substitutes for copper in cooling and refrigeration tube, and titanium and steel appear in heat exchangers ([USGS](https://pubs.usgs.gov/periodicals/mcs2026/mcs2026-copper.pdf)). But there's a tradeoff: a peer-reviewed comparison found aluminum-tube finned heat exchangers delivered roughly 4–12% lower heat transfer than identically structured copper, even though they cost far less ([Pang et al., 2023](https://doi.org/10.1155/2023/6666947)). Copper stays in the coils for a reason.

Tariffs: a second lever on the same metal

The steel and aluminum in HVAC cabinets and coils have sat under Section 232 national-security tariffs for years, and the White House has since brought copper imports under a Section 232 framework as well (Proclamation 10962, July 2025) ([The White House](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/09/modifying-the-scope-of-reciprocal-tariffs-and-establishing-procedures-for-implementing-trade-and-security-agreements/)). In mid-2026 the administration revised certain Section 232 rates covering metal content in residential HVAC equipment and parts — a move trade press reported "could help stabilize HVAC equipment pricing and improve supply-chain flexibility for contractors" ([Contracting Business](https://www.contractingbusiness.com/magazine/79137)).

A tariff change isn't a refund.Relief at the border takes time to reach a quote. Existing inventory bought at the old rate, lead times, and rolling component price increases can keep retail prices firm even after a rate is cut. A headline about lower tariffs is not the same as a lower invoice.

What a homeowner or builder can do

  • Ask for an itemized quote.Equipment, accessories (line set, refrigerant, thermostat), and labor should be separate lines so you can see what's metal-driven versus labor-driven.
  • Check the quote's expiration.When metal prices and tariff rates move, valid-quote windows shorten. A 30-day quote in this market is reasonable; "good indefinitely" is not.
  • Don't time the copper market.Waiting for metal prices to drop usually costs more in a summer install premium and a less flexible schedule than any commodity dip saves.
  • Right-size the system.An oversized unit costs more up front and short-cycles — a Manual J load calculation protects against paying for capacity you don't need.
